CUMBRIA BEEKEEPERS AREA ASSOCIATION HONEY SHOW 2ND NOVEMBER 2024, BOTHEL VILLAGE HALL
Based on feedback from those who attended, the Cumbria Beekeepers Area Association Honey Show, held at Bothel Village Hall on 2nd November, was a resounding success.
Open to all, whether beekeepers or not, the morning talks were very well received: Chris Park discussed Beekeeping Folklore and Mythology, and Jane Medwell presented Bees, Other Pollinators and Flowers. Delegates said the speakers were engaging, entertaining and very knowledgeable. Plenty of new things were learned and several attendees took away ideas to try next season.
Lunch was a triumph and one of the highlights of the show. Heavenly Fish and Chips did an outstanding job and served 50 meals in less than half an hour, all freshly cooked and delicious.
There were four afternoon activities to choose from: Peter Lewis presented a session on Honey Tasting and in the main hall the sessions were: Skeps and Natural Beekeeping with Chris Park; Making Salves and Balms from the Garden and Hive with Esther Gigli; and the Wonderful World of Wax with Jane Medwell.
Peter Lewis Judged the exhibition, and the quality of the entries was excellent. Peter presented the trophies to the prize winners, but everyone who entered should be celebrated.
Jane presented Certificates to candidates who successfully passed the BBKA Basic and the Honey Bee Health Assessments. The candidates have demonstrated a huge commitment to completing these assessments and it has been wonderful to see so many more beekeepers considering taking not just the practical Certificates but also the BBKA written exams.
The show could not have run so efficiently and smoothly without the substantial efforts of the volunteers: Sara Barnes; Stephen Barnes; Matt Davies; Ian Gregory; Marie Gregory; Debbie Keighley; and Andy Smith. Thanks should also be extended to Stephen and Sara, Nick and Sarah Horn, and Margaret Riches for accommodating speakers, providing meals and chauffeuring speakers.
